I loved this book as a child (a gift when I was eleven) and when I reread it this week, I was once again enchanted by the peaceable setting, the lyrical language and the whimsical illustrations. I remembered the songs ("Who were the first to cry Noel? Animals all, as it befell, In the stable where they did dwell, Joy shall be theirs in the morning!") and the friendship between Rat and Mole.
