I had really high expectations going into this book. I have heard amazing things about it, and not so amazing things about it. But, as per usual, I cancelled out the bad reviews and only focused on the raving ones. I wish I were one of those people who could not stop raving over this book.

When I first started reading A Great and Terrible Beauty, I admit I had mixed feelings. It felt a little too predictable, a little too juvenile. I didn’t like how whiny and inconsiderate Gemma was; I didn’t like how stereotypical and clique-like the boarding school characters were. I felt at the beginning that I could pretty much guess what was going to happen. I was, however wrong! Libba Bray really surprised me with her creativity and unexpected turns.

I didn't care for this book, although the audio version make it a lot less painful to read. I did t care for the alternate worlds and dark magic. I did like the characters, but I will not be continuing on with the series as I don't care to find out what happens next.

I got this from the library, but within the first pages the heroine was already on my nerves, and I could perceive an inherent shallowness to the whole affair that turned me off. So I returned it to the library, and won't bother trying it again.

Libba Bray's writing is a treat. She blends humor, drama and mystery perfectly. The book's premise itself is very intriguing and that's what made me pick the book up. The book dint disappoint. It is a good read but not flawless. ...more
