This was actually a good 4.5 stars. It was a fantastic story and it really moved along. There is no doubt that it got tough to read at times and there were pages of dense internal and external monologues which got tiresome, but never once did I get bored with the story. The psychology and the internal contradictions of Raskolnikov were so interesting. I loved how he teetered on madness the whole way through the book and you were never quite sure what was real. This is a psychological study of crime told mostly from the perspective of the criminal, a pathetic, unemployed former student plotting to rob and murder his pawn broker. So begins a series of really bad decisions.
At its best, the book delivers profound observations and trippy dream sequences. It also shifts into farce mode as diverse characters crowd together with a confusing set of secrets and motivations, while our main anti-hero keeps getting away with murder through sheer dumb luck.
