A man and his son wander a desolate and destroyed American landscape after some unnamed world-wide disaster has pretty much killed off most of the earth’s population and destroyed the environment. Neither character is ever named, though the boy does call the man “Papa.”

Shelves: literature, dystopia

This is a dark and chilling novel which has a tension about it which means you just keep turning the pages. It is written in a very spare style with little punctuation. The sparseness of the writing matches the devastating bareness of the post-apocalyptic landscape which the man and the boy and walking through. You find yourself asking where they are going? This was the first book I had read by Cormac McCarthy. I was told by so many people what a great writer he was. I was recommended several other titles that I may eventually read. It will be a while though before I get the bad taste of this out of my mouth.
