This is basically everything I'd like to see more of in sci-fi: deeply realized cultures engaging with the implications of galactic colonialism, exploration of different models for technology, and flawed but fascinating institutions and characters. Beautiful.

I am so not into SciFi but boy, this book got me! I need to read the next one now.
For being only 90 pages, there's a lot of story in here. But also not as much as I would have liked. I know it's the first in a trilogy so obviously there's more to it, but I'm not sure why such short works were separated into three volumes.

Recommended by a librarian and a good choice because I needed something to get me back in the groove. I skipped two full months of reading (due to the pandemic). This story had a strong lead and a good theme (of acceptance), but I still struggled a bit to embrace it. Wasn’t too memorable to me overall, though I may give a sequel a try. It served its purpose for me which was to get through a good book quickly to spur my interest in books again.
This was a quick read and entertaining. I liked the uniqueness of the world building but I didn’t engage with the main character. But it might be more me than the book since I’ve been avoiding YA books this year but I had to give this a try. Because of the length, everything seemed to move too fast too and lacked depth. But I am going to read on.
I liked this very much. I'll definitely read the sequels and more by this author.
