Binti, the protagonist of this afrofuturistic novella, is a member of the Himba tribe from northern Nimbia. Since fresh water is rare and precious where she was raised, members of the tribe bathe with otjize, a mixture of clay and aromatic flowers. The orange-tinged substance is also used to protect their skin from the harsh desert environment. Otjize plays an integral part of the story.

Very interesting novella about how sometimes it's okay not to fit in. You might be just the unique piece that's needed to save the day.

I am so not into SciFi but boy, this book got me! I need to read the next one now.
Recommended by a librarian and a good choice because I needed something to get me back in the groove. I skipped two full months of reading (due to the pandemic). This story had a strong lead and a good theme (of acceptance), but I still struggled a bit to embrace it. Wasn’t too memorable to me overall, though I may give a sequel a try. It served its purpose for me which was to get through a good book quickly to spur my interest in books again.
