I put off reading this for years. I mean who wants to read a story about five sisters who commit suicide? Eugenides writes beautifully. And for me a child of the 50s and 60s this was about the death of the optimistic, protected, prosperous childhood that we grew up in. Oh right, there was the threat of nuclear distruction constantly hanging over us, as well as the gradual realization of the damage that we were doing to our world. Eugenides is an amazing writer. His prose is great & I loved Middlesex. However, this book was lost to me.
We don't know who the narrator boys are or why they're important. So, why should the reader care about their lives & how they were affected by the suicides?
The important and worthwhile social commentary doesn't come until the last chapter. It's not worth dragging through the beginning chapters just to get to this section. ...more
