this is a pretty little social epistolatory novel

Lady Susan is a delicious character. Needing to run from her current scandal of having an affair with a married man, she heads to her late husband's brother's estate. Her sister-in-law Lady Catherine has never forgiven her for trying to convince her husband to not marry her and does not welcome the visit. She is even more upset when Lady Susan sets her cap for and starts charming Catherine's brother Reginald who has also come to visit and meet the infamous Lady Susan. Then there is Lady Susan's ...more

This was a short, enjoyable read that reminded me more of Dangerous Liaisons than any of Austen's other books. I had a little trouble following who everyone was at the beginning. About 1/3rd of the way through, it all started to make more sense and I actually went back and reread the beginning. Overall, a cute read with a satisfactory ending. Not Pride and Prejudice, but I expected that based on the background of the book.

Oh, I wish Austen would have been able to completely finish this novel, at least I think it is one of her unfinished one. It is very funny indeed told mostly in letters and pitting Lady Susan against her sister-in-law mostly. I quite enjoyed my time with this one and can see me rereading it in the future. Would recommend if you like Austen and haven't read it yet. ...more
