This acted as a pocket-sized, lovely bit of additional material from the Harry Potter world, written with J.K. Rowling's (/Newt Scamander's) typical sense of dry humour. Scrawled notes from Harry and Ron also act as funny marginalia which really bring out the otherwise textbook nature of Fantastic Beasts. Overall, I liked it. Would it stand on its own? This book was funny it took me back to Hogwarts and gave me bits and pieces of Harry. I'm not sure I could imagine him talking the way his notes sound (funny and sarcastic) but it was an interesting side to him. The beasts where interesting to read about although I could sense myself skim over some descriptions. At times it really did feel a lot like a text book. I really want another HP fix and while this gave me a little of that I want back into the world with another novel or spin off series. ...more

This slim little volume is supposedly a faithful reprinting of Harry Potter’s very own copy of this text book. It includes various notes and drawings in the margins made by the young wizard and his friends as they studied the care and feeding of magical creatures.
