This acted as a pocket-sized, lovely bit of additional material from the Harry Potter world, written with J.K. Rowling's (/Newt Scamander's) typical sense of dry humour. Scrawled notes from Harry and Ron also act as funny marginalia which really bring out the otherwise textbook nature of Fantastic Beasts. Overall, I liked it. Would it stand on its own? This book was funny it took me back to Hogwarts and gave me bits and pieces of Harry. I'm not sure I could imagine him talking the way his notes sound (funny and sarcastic) but it was an interesting side to him. The beasts where interesting to read about although I could sense myself skim over some descriptions. At times it really did feel a lot like a text book. I really want another HP fix and while this gave me a little of that I want back into the world with another novel or spin off series.
