Somehow I managed to miss this book in school, along with the film version. While I knew vaguely that it didn't end well, I'm so glad no one ever spoiled the particulars of the story for me--what a gut punch. I read the book in a day and couldn't put it down. Structurally it's pretty much perfect, and the characterizations are complex and real. Steinbeck wins me over every freaking time. ...more
