A typical Murakami in as much as the line between dream and reality is blurry for the duration of the narrative. Stories within stories and a cast of both extremely odd and mundane seeming characters which crazy things happen to. Old war stories. Reminisces of childhood zoos and a child who stopped speaking at the age of six because of what he saw in a dream. well i either read a different book to the one these other people think so fabulous or something is very wrong. I have no idea what of this book was actually happening and what was in the warped mind of Toru Okadu. Full of macabre dialler erotic dialogue which have little to do with anything Toru experiences or dreams a whole litany of rubbish, With characters named after countries (creta and Malta Karna( and spices (cinnamon and Nutmeg).
