I am not a “dog person” and did not expect to like this classic tale, but I’m really glad I read this when I did. My father was a great outdoorsman and he loved animals, but especially our dogs. I listened to the first half on audio, but then finished by reading the actual book. This last half is when Buck, a St Bernard / Shepherd mix has finally found a man he loves and who loves him. A strong dog is stolen from a soft life, and discovers his feral instincts as he is abused as a sled-puller in the Yukon.
I read this classic as a child some fifty years ago, but remembered almost none of it. My new opinion is that it is beautifully written and the most masculine book I have ever read. That said, it is mis-shelved as a children's book. My dad should not have given it to me. The vocabulary is too advanced and the content is too intensely violent.

I haven't read a book that was told from the view point of an animal in a long time. This was a book club pick for 2016 as movies that are based on books. I saw the version that starred Clark Gable and Loretta Young. It definitely had differences! I was surprised to learn from my library that this is marketed as a children's book. Just read this for "The Big Read". It's a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. I didn't realize that the story starts out in Santa Clara. Santa Clara Library is sponsoring events related to the book.
