What Members Thought

When someone suggested this book for our book group we virtually all gave a collective groan. I did not want to read this immensely popular kid's book about a young wizard. But all I can say is ... WOW! Our entire book club LOVED it! I was hooked and read all four of the (then) existing books. Well-written. Good vocabulary. A "moral" story. There are universal themes here and the writing moves the story along quickly.

Took forever to get through reading this out loud to the kids. I would have thought being stuck at home with them would have made it easier, but we were so out of any type of normal routine that we barely read at all. And, Melanie and I have read this so many times we were not in a rush to find out what would happen, and Natalie was still not too interested. When I was reading this book for myself, it was a fun read. On rereading it with my 7 year old, I was less impressed with the stereotypes and chosen dialogue of the book. Of course, he enjoyed it, so maybe that's the better review. Of course, "shut up" has now entered his vocabulary as well (though we talked about how it would be better to us different words, depending on the circumstances and to whom one is speaking).
