When my local library's book discussion group selected this mystery, I knew nothing of the television series. Therefore, I knew little about the book. Shortly after beginning to read it, I knew a few plot elements: (1) someone had been murdered, (2) the murder occurred during the school's fundraiser, trivia night, and, (3)an investigation was underway.

I really disliked the first Liane Moriarty book I read (The Husband's Secret), but I'm glad friends convinced me to read some of her other stuff because there is no one better at creating compelling stories. I listen to a lot of great audiobooks but I always struggle a bit to keep my attention on them. Not so with Liane Moriarty: I'm hooked for the entire novel. The slight mystery element didn't hurt things, either.

I was not crazy about The Husband's Secret when I read it last year, so my expectations for this one were quite low. I admit, however, that I ended up really loving it. The characters were caddy and superficial in ways, but others' stories were intriguing and mysterious, and I couldn't stop reading to find out more about them and where everything was leading. This one was a great surprise for me.

4 1/2 stars.
My wife would say this looks like a "grocery store book," which is kind of a backhanded way of saying it's chick lit. It's not though. Yes, there are three female protagonists with children, but this is not beachy fluff. It's a suspenseful (I could hardly turn the pages fast enough), dark, funny look at suburban life that has some really solid characters I'm going to miss. Hell, don't take my word for it, listen to Stephen King if you're wary. He even thought it was "a damn good boo ...more

I haven't read a 5-star book in a while. Then my mother-in-law recommended this one, and I really enjoyed it. I loved the writing style, the humor mixed in among the drama, and the way it kept you wondering about most of the facts of the case right to the conclusion.

This is probably 3.5 stars but I fight feel it qualified for rounding up. The characters mosty felt like caricatures, without much depth or nuance and the ending was so abrupt and short that it fell short for me. This is my first book by this author. I know she's hugely popular but I don't know if I would try another of hers at this point.

This book is great chick lit! Fun to read and a page turner. It's a murder mystery. You find out on page one someone died but you don't know who died or who is responsible until the very end. Not great literature and sometimes her constantly switching narrations were confusing but a solid read!!
