2.5 stars. I found this story to be very slow moving. It wasn't until the last 100 pages that I actually started enjoying it. It took a long time to get there, though.

Loved it! Highly recommend. This was my book club book for April and I read it in 3 days-- which is amazing for me because I read slowly.
I was intrigued with people who said it reminded them of Heart of Darkness because I didn't see that at all -- maybe the idea of someone going into the jungle but that was it. I also listened to two podcasts that Anne Patchett had as interviews and that was fun to hear about her research and her approach to the book. ...more

I think I enjoyed this one more than Bel Canto. This had a bit more action and plot. I think Dr. Swenson was a wonderful character. I love her tough as nails demeanor, but she was far more complex than that. I'm sure I, too, would have been completely sucked into her circle. Easter was also a great little guy. I'm fairly ambivalent about Marlena.

this one was an ok one. there was great hope for this one and just like Bel Canto it let me down...
This was a very enjoyable book and brought back my memories of the Amazon basin quite vividly.
