Book on CD narrated by Simon Vance.
First published in 1877, this is the only novel written by Anna Sewell, but it has become a much-loved classic and one of the most widely read animal stories. Black Beauty tells his own story, from his early days as a colt frolicking with his friends and his mother, to learning to accept a bridle, saddle and rider, to being sold as a carriage horse, then to pulling a cab in London, and eventually to a happy country life once again.

I read this with my son years ago and really didn't remember much of the story. I didn't remember the story being told in the perspective of the horse and I loved that it was. A few years ago I wouldn't have wanted to read this but as my reading tastes have changed I found this story sweet and wonderful and I can't wait to one day read it with my grand kids. I sure hope they love to read as much as I do and my daughter does.

Were those bearing reins one of the most stupid things ever? Let's make sure our horse can't perform its duties properly, but at least it looks good with its head up. Don't get me started on docking tails & ears, all for aesthetic reasons. Humans are so stupid - stop one idiocy & they find another.
I love this tale told in Beauty's own voice. His story is a heart-wrenching tearjerker & a timeless classic. Possibly the first horse book I ever read, but it's so long ago I can't be sure. ...more
