This novel was published in 1993 (LONG before the huge influx of YA dystopian novels in recent years), & it's been on my to-read list for over a decade. I really loved the novel, & I only wish that I had read it sooner. If I had, then I would have definitely given Ally Condie's novel, Matched, a much lower rating.

This book was one that I definitely had to think over. As most of the characters are being oppressed and it's mostly by their own doing, it creates a slightly dark and insightful book. I wouldn't suggest it as a light read.
