I was mostly frustrated by this memoir until I got towards the end. I wanted to see more of what I saw on page 226 throughout the book. BUT! I thought about it and overall I like that Didion is true to herself throughout. She's not emotional like I am, like many people are. She shows her care through being methodical and being worrier. She's also a reader of complex medical literature, pesterer of medical staff, she's affluent and a bit abstracted from the average joe reader. And though this irk ...more

I haven't read any Joan Didion since college. She is definitely a powerful and gifted writer. This subject matter is, of course, extremely personal.

I read 6-10 memoirs a year. This is not among my favorites but was definitely worth the read.
