Chief Inspector Gently, with his name and his peppermint creams and habit of blowing smoke-rings, seemed a slow and introspective detective, yet now and then shows a hint of steel that Copping, one of his colleagues, is surprised to witness. And he manages to tie the case up quite neatly, from the identification of the naked and tortured corpse that was found on the beach to its link with counterfeit notes and secret organizations.
