I liked the view of Swedish immigration & racism in this first Wallender mystery more than I liked Wallender himself. I don't care for mysteries which focus on the detective's private life (as many contemporary mystery novels do), so all the stuff about his wife, daughter, and father just stuck me as whingeing. The mystery was nothing special but I could see how other Nordic writers may have been influenced by his writing- this is one of the older thrillers and could probably have served as a template. Overall, it was only mildly interesting at some points as far as the crime solving goes. It's also a little weird and gross how the writer mentions that the main lead had diarrhea twice during the book.

This was a purchased book from the kindle store.
