Typical Miss Silver story, with a young woman being threatened and a family full of suspects. There's a suspicious American thrown in, too.
I agree with the reviewers who find Rachel hard to understand. She spends a fair amount of time waffling and refusing to believe what she really knows. I'd have swallowed this more easily if her family had been nicer.

I wanted to get back to Miss Silver, as I’ve only read a handful but enjoyed the character and the mysteries she solves. This was no exception, I found the ratcheting up of tension well done, and the finale exciting.

Found some of the supporting characters very tiring but enjoyed Miss Silver. Will probably try another in the series.

I actually enjoyed this book for the most part but it has the same problem most Miss Silver books have which is an awful romantic subplot (the love interests in Patricia Wentworth's books are almost always stupid, insulting brutes) and frustratingly dumb protagonist (Rachel, not Miss Silver). I struggled to guess who the villain was though, it held my interest, and the narrator for the audiobook is perfect.

Turns out Miss Silver isn't just another grey-haired old busybody! The intro to Lonesome is excellent, characters are plenitudinous [there are 4 women given to hysterical breakdowns], the plot simmers along with a cast of largely dislikeable characters, and the bad guy gets his just desserts.

I love Miss Silver. I like her no-nonsense demeanor. I like the way she solves mysteries. I like to hear about what she is knitting.
