Typical Miss Silver story, with a young woman being threatened and a family full of suspects. There's a suspicious American thrown in, too.

I agree with the reviewers who find Rachel hard to understand. She spends a fair amount of time waffling and refusing to believe what she really knows. I'd have swallowed this more easily if her family had been nicer.

Then there's the final action scene - (view spoiler)

I wanted to get back to Miss Silver, as I’ve only read a handful but enjoyed the character and the mysteries she solves. This was no exception, I found the ratcheting up of tension well done, and the finale exciting.

Rachel Trahern was left a large fortune by her father, with some difficult and cumbersome limitations on how she could use the money. Her hypochondriac, self-centered, whiny elder sister was passed over, with a settlement upon her marriage, but she and her annoying family have run th

Rachel Treherne was entrusted by her dying father with his fortune, which is tied up in various ways. She can only dispose of some of it to her relatives, of whom she has a large number. But now it seems someone may be trying to kill her. Naturally she calls in Miss Silver to find out who she is. Thi is quite an interesting story, it makes a change to have Miss Silver trying to catch the murderer before the murder has happened. I have to admit though that I thought the motive a bit weak - and th ...more

Found some of the supporting characters very tiring but enjoyed Miss Silver. Will probably try another in the series.

I actually enjoyed this book for the most part but it has the same problem most Miss Silver books have which is an awful romantic subplot (the love interests in Patricia Wentworth's books are almost always stupid, insulting brutes) and frustratingly dumb protagonist (Rachel, not Miss Silver). I struggled to guess who the villain was though, it held my interest, and the narrator for the audiobook is perfect. ...more

Turns out Miss Silver isn't just another grey-haired old busybody! The intro to Lonesome is excellent, characters are plenitudinous [there are 4 women given to hysterical breakdowns], the plot simmers along with a cast of largely dislikeable characters, and the bad guy gets his just desserts. ...more

I love Miss Silver. I like her no-nonsense demeanor. I like the way she solves mysteries. I like to hear about what she is knitting.

A near total mess for the most part due to weak fluttery characters and a couple of evil ones. 3 stars are more than enough.
