Entertaining wartime outing with Scotland Yard Inspector Littlejohn. He’s called in to investigate the murder of a London developer, Mr. Solomon Burt, who renovated a beautiful estate after kicking out the broke and elderly squire.

Burt subdivided Harwood into several luxury flats, taking one for himself. It looked to be a sound investment, but was rough going, as there were supposed hauntings and poltergeists damaging the renovations from the start, and holding up the workers. The project final

The bulk of the story is set in 1939 and the war is just heating up for Britain. The blackout is prevalent and women and children have been sent out of London. Before we get to the main thread, we're given a prequel. We see Mr. Solomon Burt (né Bernstein), a real estate developer, get stranded near the Harwood manor house. Published in 1945, this novel starts in the Autumn of 1938, with property developer Solomon Burt breaking down in his car and discovering Harwood Hall. Before long, he has brought the house, ousted the previous owner and created luxury flats. As war approaches and has, indeed, broken out by the time of the murder of Burt himself, this leaves Chief Inspector Littlejohn to work out what happened.

Wartime murder

What do you get when you mix a hodgepodge group of people with an unscrupulous owner of an upscale inn in the country during wartime? An interesting Littlejohn murder mystery

An extra star for the amusing minor characters. An updated (WW2) version of the classic manor house mystery with a fixed set of suspects.
