The perfect Golden Age type of mystery, set in an English village, with an attractive policeman (Inspector Alan Grant), a nice sidekick (Sergeant Williams), a number of sympathetic characters, and a twist in the tail. I think it could be my favourite of the Grant books so far.

“At Scotland Yard, it was said Alan Grant had two vices: coffee and coffee.”
I love the wit in the writing but make no mistake, one has to be willing to plunge into a certain dialect to make the prose sing.

Well the author certainly fooled me. You are made to feel all along that something is false about the set up but I never would have guessed the truth.
