To Love and Be Wise boasts another absolutely gorgeous cover by Pamela Patrick. This is one time when I understand the Goodreads folk who obsess about uniformity in a series. My editions are a ragtag group; someday I'd like to have the matched set.

I've read the better known Tey books, but not these other Inspector Grant novels. I enjoyed this one, but it seemed to me to have the author's hallmark of being a bit detached. The mystery was interesting but I never got into anyone's head - or heart - and though I liked Grant I can't say I ever got to know him. Inspector Grant has a baffling mystery to investigate. A mysterious young man called Lesley Searle has gone missing, apparently drowned in the river, and no trace of him can be found. Nobody in the village where he was staying has any idea of what can have happened to him, and the more Grant tries to find out about Lesley, the more puzzled he becomes. Lesley seems to have had a strong affect on many of the people he met, but his personality remains elusive. A very clever and unusual mystery with ...more

I definitely liked To Love And Be Wise. It is an Inspector Grant mystery. Some of the Grant series I've loved, others, not quite so much.

Inspector Grant is at a party with a friend, Marta Hallard, the event is to celebrate the release of a new Lavinia Fitch novel. While there he happens to see an oh-so-beautiful young man. People's gaze just seems to follow him, he's that beautiful. He talks to Grant and asks him to point out Lavinia Fitch. He claims he wants an introduction to Fitch's nephew,

So smart and sharply written. Not that I should expect anything less.
