Sad to reach the end of this lovely series, but what a delightful, satisfying ending - with not just one thrilling, daring rescue, but three - and no one even drew a sword. Brother Cadfael to the rescue, armed only with decency, bravery and faith.
I’ll be honest, I’ve never been able to follow the politics and allegiances of the civil war between Stephen and Maud that have formed the background of this series. The futility, greed and waste have been a constant, and they are on full display here, ...more

It’s fitting that the last entry in the Cadfael Chronicles take on the two sides of the Benedictine brother: his soldier past and his monastic present. Having recently discovered a son from his soldier past, Cadfael must leave his abbey, and his vows to seek his freedom.
Full of rich English history, sometimes more than bargained for, Peters provides an emotional, action-enhanced story of reconciliation and grace.
A satisfying conclusion to a unique mystery series.
