This is the ninth in the Brunetti series, and we see our main character on a Saturday morning, home alone, reading and relaxing when the doorbell rings. The visitor is a young man named Franco Rossi, who in a bizarre, Venetian example of red tape, has arrived to inform him there is doubt of the official status of his apartment which does not seem to legally exist...

I am pretty sure that I read this before and probably would have given it a higher marking then. I knew I had read it before when I saw that this was the one where his apartment was in question. I did not recall the whole story though. It was good even on a re-read. Although the ending kind of snuck up on me.

Venice, and Italy, are not portrayed sympathetically, but Brunetti's integrity and marriage are inspirational. Excellent plot with a surprising opening, unimaginable to most of us. I felt there was a plot point left unexplained, but that reflects true police work. ...more

I read books where a dead body is found within first 20 pages. In this book, the dead body comes in only after about 60 pages. Am surprised i stuck with this book. I didn't find this book as impressive as 'Death at la Fenice'. ...more
