I had a sneaky feeling all the way through this story (which contains all the elements of a classic golden age detective mystery, the country house complete with secret room, the group of people invited for a house party, a bit of romance and a rich elderly relative) that I was being led up the garden path. Clues were dropped so often they littered the floor, but which ones should I take seriously. It also had the slight flavour of a farce at times which made me wonder if it was all an elaborate ...more

Anthony Berkeley/Francis Iles is one of my favorite Golden Age writers and he doesn't fail to amuse with this lesser know title of his. Took me a while to establish all the various characters in my head, but I soon did. And I can't resist a mystery with a seance in the plot. The mystery is all neatly tied up in the end and the murderer and plot revealed. ...more
