I have enjoyed many Elly Griffiths books, while I have found others to be somewhat so-so. This falls into that second count, but it is only the first in a series and I would give the second in the series a go.

A young woman's body is found cut into three and Inspect Edgar Stephens is unpleasantly reminded of a magic trick and his old friend - the magician - Max Mephisto - who is currently appearing in Brighton where the remains are discovered. Edgar is forced by the murder to look again at his uncomfortable time during World War II as part of a small group of people known as The Magic Men who specialised in camouflage and trickery to defeat the enemy.

This debut of a new series set in Brighton in the 1050's was great fun. Centred around the Theatre and Variety world, a murderer seems to be targeting a group of ex-soldiers, most of whom were stage magicians as civilians, who served together in a secret unit stationed in Inverness during WWII. I love the Ruth Galloway series by the same author, but I'm sad to say, I could only get about halfway through this book. It just didn't hold my attention--I think one reason is that the cast of characters seemed uninteresting and virtually interchangeable. Maybe it was just me. Will look forward to the next Ruth Galloway mystery, though. :)

This was the first mystery that I've read where I knew who the killer was half way in. I love magic and was hoping for something more thrilling but skimmed to the end.
