This is the eighth Falco novel. It begins with Falco at a dinner in Rome for the Society of Olive Oil Producers of Baetica. After the dinner a man is killed and Falco's old nemesis, Anacrites, the Chief Spy, is seriously hurt. It is up to Falco to discover what happened and why but, to do so, he needs to travel to Spain. However, Helena is not keen to be left at home and she is heavily pregnant. Is it wise for them to travel together and can they return before Helena gives birth?

I don’t know why, but this one really dragged for me. It started out rather confusingly, with the reader plopped right into Falco as a guest at an oil producer’s banquet in Rome. Laeta, who is some bureaucratic competitor to Anacrites, the spy boss Falco despises, has brought him along. This book reminded me of the first book, The Silver Pigs. Like in that book, Falco ends up in a foreign part of the empire (Spain, instead of Britain), investigating an industry being used for crooked profits (he
