I am really enjoying this series. This is the third novel featuring Merrily Watkins, her teenage daughter, Jane, and a host of old and new characters.
Merrily becomes involved in a local conflict between a pagan couple, Robin and Betty, who have brought a decommissioned church and a charismatic preacher, the Rev. Nicholas Ellis, and his followers. Of course, as always with Phil Rickman, this novel is not one thing. Yes, there is a crime, plus hints of the supernatural, but this fits uncomfortably ...more

This is the third book in this series, and towards the beginning when a gossipy TV show was brought into it, I was actually wondering if it was going to be a disappointment. I am so glad that it is not! This is really a case of Christians verses Pagans, when a couple of pagans buy a house on a site of decommissioned church on the Welsh border. The beginning was interesting, halfway through it became gripping, but I found the resolution taking too long, hence the three stars. One thing, though, the characters in this Merrily Watkins series are fully-fleshed. I do appreciate the well-developed characters but I feel that there are too many plotlines which made the story longer than necessary. I'll still be reading the next book though.
