This is the second Erast Fandorin mystery. Set in 1877, during the Russo-Turkish war, with Russia declaring war on the Ottoman Empire.

Varvara is very keen on women's rights, but when she is robbed and abandoned by her guide, she finds herself rescued by Erast Fandorin. Just in case you're interested, this may be the 3rd book in the series in order of release in the United States, but it follows shortly after The Winter Queen in chronology.

I do recommend it, but probably only if you've at least read The Winter Queen and enjoy the character of Ernst Fandorin. This book is not quite as good as Winter Queen or Murder on the Leviathan, so you may not enjoy it as much.

More of a spy thriller than a mystery and Fandorin is secondary to the female lead. A good story, short, and a bit confusing with the various Russian names for the same person.
