Really more adventure than mystery, I struggled to get into this one or keep track of who was on which side.

There was a murder near the beginning, but Cadfael didn’t really get a chance to investigate. He was accompanying Brother Mark on a diplomatic mission to Wales as interpreter. There’s some sort of feud between princes going on, our monk heroes land in the middle of it, and are taken hostage by the Danes, invading from Dublin. This book is something of an adventure for Cadfael, enabling him to leave the Shrewsbury monastery to accompany Brother Mark into Wales. Mark needs a translator who speaks Welsh and Cadfael is very willing to go. Where the visit should have been straight forward, it becomes anything but. A young girl goes missing and the Danes from Ireland have began to attack. Both monks go looking for the girl, causing all three to be taken as hostages by the Danes.

This is the weakest of the series. By page 60 (I think) you know how it will end, and you spend the rest of the book waiting for Peters to get there.
