This book is something of an adventure for Cadfael, enabling him to leave the Shrewsbury monastery to accompany Brother Mark into Wales. Mark needs a translator who speaks Welsh and Cadfael is very willing to go. Where the visit should have been straight forward, it becomes anything but. A young girl goes missing and the Danes from Ireland have began to attack. Both monks go looking for the girl, causing all three to be taken as hostages by the Danes.
