Lunchtime Listen December 2024
I see reading the review of my read below that I really liked this, and I have to say it is still very good. Maybe at some point during this lunchtime listen I got slightly distracted because the book seemed to finish very quickly with some things left a little in the air.

Maigret is called into investigate the stabbing of a wealthy tycoon, Ducrau. All is not what it seems. The tycoon is miserable with a family that fails to live up to his expectations. Set in Paris canals and near a lock the unsuccessful stabbing of the tycoon results in more deaths.
Lots of drinking with Maigret nearing retirement and solving the case before he retired. Not my favorite Maigret with unlikeable characters but very atmospheric.

My August Maigret - chosen because it was available and because that misty cover looks so cool, compared to what feels like an endless heat wave in the PNW.
I am confused by the fact that this book has Maigret retiring, when he manifestly does not retire. Is he planning to grow vegetable marrows? Throwing himself off of Reichenbach falls? What is happening here?
Anyway, I did not like this one so well as my July Maigret, although I think that 3 stars is about as low as I am likely to go with a Mai ...more

This was not particularly good. For one thing Maigret "retires" at the end of this novel (even though Simenon has some sixty more to write!), and for another it is so driven by the obnoxious personality of the principal protagonist a shipping business owner called Emile Ducrau, then it is hard to read without getting thoroughly annoyed with the lot of them - Maigret included. Ducrau is an awful man - rich, self made, and knows it. Horrible to his wife, children, mistresses, servants, employees e

This time the problem for Maigret is trying to find out exactly who is related to who, and why a wealthy owner of barges, quarries and other businesses along the river, is stabbed and left to drown. All in all three hangings take place and left to Maigret to find the murderer. The answer has to found quickly, as Maigret is due to retire the following week and is moving away from the city, to spend his retirement in the countryside along the river. The wealthy man offers Maigret a job, but he is

One of my favorite Maigret's, so far (I have many to go). Luckily, I know there are lots more or I would be upset by an announcement early in the book. All the characters in this mystery are well-developed, interesting, and sympathetic (with the exception of the son-in-law!).
