It was difficult to decide whether this was 3 or 4 stars, in the end I settled on 3 although that does seem unfair.
It's got over 600 pages but even so, it has taken me over 3 weeks to read it. The trouble is, that as a result of continuing to work on major garden redesign, my own, I have never had a sustained period of time to read this book. This has meant that I have grabbed 15 pages or so , whenever I could so I have had real trouble getting into it. That said I read the last 60 or ...more

The last time I finished a 600+ page novel I was in my 20s and the book was Michener’s Hawaii. I loved it, but have steered clear of those monstrous tomes since. And then this series was recommended to me after reading a supernatural mystery by Sarah Rayne. I took a deep breath and plunged in.

Really enjoyed this. We are introduced to Merrily Watkins, a widow with a fifteen year old daughter, Jane. Merrily is a priest, who is a bit of an embarrassment to Jane, but even so they have a good relationship.Merrily is given the position of Priest-In-Charge of a church in Ledwardine, which is a small village of historical interest, but has gained a lot of "incomers" by those who are wealthy enough.
