This is the fifth in the Marcus Didius Falco series. We begin with Falco and Helena returning to Rome, from Germany, after their adventures in the previous book. However, this is not to be a heroic homecoming. It is cold, Falco's apartment has been broken into and, when he and Helena arrive at his mother's, they have to first turf out a soldier who knew Falco's brother, Festus and who has installed himself comfortably waiting for Falco's return. Censorinius informs Falco that his brother Festus

The auctioneer Geminus is pulled into the case as Falco urgently investigates the bloody murder of a centurion on leave. One of

I am enjoying this series more and more as I get to know and understand the characters. As usual, the author is interested in educating us about a Roman life as well as providing a first rate, well-written, wry and fun whodunnit. Luckily there are many more to read.
The GR blurb:
'A.D. 72: To many, Rome is the center of the Empire. To Marcus Didius Falco, Imperial spy and casual informer, it is the home of his mother, the domineering matriarch who has kept the Didius clan together since her husban ...more

Excellent, excellent book with Falco dealing with his father and his older brother's legacy (good and bad).
