The author's portrayal of the time period is excellent. I could feel the squish of mud and smell Henry VIII's festering leg. The characters are interesting and fully formed realistic people. This book involved Henry's 'progress' in York showed the tremendous amount of stuff they moved: people of all classes, furniture, tents, dogs and a couple of bears. Much organization was needed and my sympathies to the man with the portable desk.
