What Members Thought

Lunchtime Listen August 2025
Well as per my review of the book below, the audio book was good, but… So I agree with my younger self below in that in the end it was all a little easy for Maigret. Very atmospheric novel, brilliantly evocative of Paris, and wonderfully read as ever, but , just not the best of Maigret stories.
Ad hoc series read 2019/20
A solid 4 stars ⭐️ with review to follow tomorrow

At first glance it seems like it is only a murder but then it follows that a safe has been cleared of a large amount to money. It also seems that the ex wife of this man is staying in the same location, and she has also remarried. Maigret works slowly as usual, int

The twelfth Maigret novel. A good'un. A cast restricted to the 28 inhabitants of an apartment block where a man is found shot. Complex relationships between first and second families, wives, mistresses, concierge, etc. Maigret persists in this claustrophobic atmosphere, and there is a stunning twist! Wonderful.

My first experience with Georges Simenon's Inspector Maigret was a delight. I picked this Penguin up used and it was very beat up, yet I couldn't stay away from the yellowed pages. The setting takes place mostly in the beautiful Place de Vosges in Paris. The characters are distinct and very French, which I loved, and the time in the early thirties was gold. I gave it four stars because the ending was a tad anti-climatic. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
