I've read a few of Anthony Berkeley's detective novels now, and I rather enjoy the way he plays with the formula. In this one, a body is discovered buried in a basement, and chief Inspector Moresby has to find out who the victim is in order to discover the culprit. Although not as well known as Golden Age sleuths like Hercule Poirot and Lord Peter Wimsey, Anthony Berkeley's Roger Sheringham stories are becoming favorites. This starts well with a young couple who have just moved into their new house. The young man decides to take a look at all of the house, and wanders down to look at the basement. It is a big area but he notices that the floor is uneven in one spot. On a closer inspection he finds that some of the bricks have recently been relayed, so he decides to dig them up and finds a body. Enjoyable read with an interesting presentation, where the background to the murder is presented as an unfinish novel written by Sheringham after he met the people involved. The overall experience was rather spoilt by the ending however.
