I've read a few of Anthony Berkeley's detective novels now, and I rather enjoy the way he plays with the formula. In this one, a body is discovered buried in a basement, and chief Inspector Moresby has to find out who the victim is in order to discover the culprit. When he manages to trace the body to Roland House, a boys prep school, he catches up with his old friend Roger Sherringham, who had worked there for a time in order to gain local colour for his novel. Excellent Book, Hated The Ending

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery and it kept me guessing throughout however I absolutely hated the ending. Disappointing and would not recommend.

On a closer inspection he finds that some of the bricks have recently been relayed, so he decides to dig them up and finds a body. From here the story follows the investigation of Chief Inspector Moresby, who is a friend of Roger Sheringham, and would ...more

Entertaining. 🙂

Enjoyable read with an interesting presentation, where the background to the murder is presented as an unfinish novel written by Sheringham after he met the people involved. The overall experience was rather spoilt by the ending however.
