This book starts with an accident on a road leading into Venice. A lorry carrying wood slips on an icy patch and overturns, killing the driver and several foreign women who were concealed in it. Then all is forgotten about the incident. Some time later a well known lawyer is found dead in a train. Brunetti is given the task to find the killer. This then becomes a very disturbing story of people trafficking, prostitution and corruption within the government.

Brunetti's fourth outing - a very dark story involving trafficking of female prostitutes from South America and Eastern Europe, filmed pornography with the death of the abused victim, and the accidental involvement of the Brunetti's fourteen year old daughter in the investigation. It is very well written, and the contradiction that is Italy - wonderful food, lovely people, marvellous culture, but the worst sort of politics, and terrible corruption in the rule of law, just leaps from the page. Maybe it's interesting for some people that like the Italian scenario but not my cup of tea.

While I like the mystery and the main character in this series, I find it a bit depressing that (view spoiler) .
