Richard III had been credited with the elimination of two nephews, and his name was a synonym for evil. But Henry VII, whose ‘settled and considered policy’ was to eliminate a whole family was regarded as a shrewd and far-seeing monarch. Not very lovable perhaps, but constructive and painstaking, and very successful withal. Grant gave up. History was something that he would never understand. Another re-read of my worn out Penguin version of this masterly cross-over whodunnit and historical investigation. A very convincing look into the disappearance of the young sons of Edward IV, as well as an amusing and literate outing for the well-loved Inspector Grant.

I was a bit disenchanted with this book. Reviews were great, but I felt the characters lacked development and the plot was slow.
