Author Henrietta Clandon was one of the many pen names of John George Hazlette Vahey (1881-1938) who was extremely productive as an author. His admittance that he never re-wrote anything may have been a slight weakness here, as the characters and storyline are a little difficult to untangle, but still this is an enjoyable story.

I thought that there are too many ill-defined characters, and I had a hard time keeping them straight. The set up is interesting with two closed circle murders six months apart. The narrator is invited into the second circle so has an outsider's perspective while still involved in the action. ...more

This was a weak 3 stars for me. The plot for murder was was a bit different to usual crime books set in at this time, but there was a huge list of characters. The names of the characters were hard work , knowing who was who was difficult, but when shorten names, or first names were used on occasions, it was even more difficult. I found none of the characters likeable. Even the doctor who was doing the sleuthing. I don't know if it was just that I had little interest left at the end, but I found ...more

In Clandon's debut mystery we find ourselves at a county house part at Hebble Chace. Hebble Chace is home to Marie Hoe-Luss who is now the widow of a wealthy English businessman. About six months ago, the Hoe-Lusses held a house-warming party at their French chateau.
