Close to 5 stars, but not close enough.
Review to follow tomorrow!
Over the last couple of days since I finished this ( I still don't seem to have a got everything back together yet), I have been thinking about this book and whether my initial 4 star rating was a bit harsh. It is a thoroughly enjoyable book with Maigret at his imperious best.
The story centres on Maigret changing his family holiday to a French northern sea port instead of the normal southern Alsace sunshine he and his wife enjoy. ...more

Goodness the characters in all Maigret novels are all so flawed. Out of the novels I have read so far this one I enjoyed the most. Perhaps because of its setting and this time his wife makes an appearance. I loved her mentioning to him on his return one night that he smelled of perfume. But not in a suspicious way.
A cursed ship, a Captain found dead, a dead cabin boy, rotting fish, superstitious fishermen and throw in a femme fatale and you have a great story.

The Grand Banks Cafe (Maigret, #9) by Georges Simenon.
There something about Maigret that I find so special...so unique. He's a detective a top notch Inspector and well respected as such. Maigret's method of deduction goes unseen by those around him and that's what I find so appealing.
Maigret's receives a letter from Jorissen a friend from school days asking for help in finding a former pupil of his innocent of the crime of murder. The letter goes on to explain that this crime took place after a ...more

Simenon packs more understanding of human characters and of their relationships - in all classes and milieux - in 150 pages, than many a revered novelist in 500. Plus a strong narrative and sense of place.

This was an interesting book in which Maigret took on a case which required him to resolve (virtually singlehandedly) the mystery surrounding the murder of a sea captain freshly returned from a 3-month cod-fishing voyage to the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. Maigret first got wind of the murder from an old friend who suggested that he come to Fécamp, the coastal town where the murder took place. Thus, instead of taking his usual holiday with Mme. Maigret to her ancestral home in Alsace, Maigret a

Maigret, who usually took his holidays with his relations, is asked by an old friend to investigate the murder of a captain of a fishing ship, and whether the man who has been arrested for the crime was actually guilty. Maigret, therefore, finds himself and his wife at the fishing village. He visits the dock side cafe where the local fishermen frequent, trying to find out exactly what had happened on the voyage the crew had recently come back from. It would seem that the crew are of the opinion

Maigret is on holiday doing a favour for a friend - Mrs Maigret isn't happy, as she sees little of him and is forced to spend hours filling time in a small hotel by the coast whilst her husband investigates a murder and helps (successfully) to ensure that the wrong man is not convicted. The murdered man is the captain of a trawler - the charge for his his killing laid against the young engaged wireless operator, whose fiancée is convinced of his innocence. A few complications, including a will i

An ill-fated three-month cod voyage returns and the captain is murdered. During the voyage, a young boy on his first work voyage washes overboard and relations among the men deteriorates. Chief Inspector Maigret comes to investigate, but no one is talking...

This Inspector Maigret was not one I thought I'd love. It's about the sea and the sailors who stick together, even in a murder investigation. But the characters are distinct and vivid and the premise is modern despite the 1930 publication date. The book is seething with female sensuality if not empowerment. The French Northern seaport is almost as strong as the characters where the drunk sailors waste their salary at the Grand Banks Cafe after a codfish sailing went horribly wrong. I especially
