So far, all of my ratings for the Flavia de Luce books have been four or five stars, but this is something of an oddity in the series and doesn't really work for me. In the previous book, we had learnt that Flavia was to be sent to Miss Bodycotes Female Academy in Canada, presumably to learn to be a spy, as her aunt had hinted.

All is so strange and indifferent to Flavia that is until as she strolls the halls of the Academy she comes across the framed portraits of former students that have since passed. And Flavia stops by the portrait of her Mother, Harriet. One fam ...more

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I loved Flavia's bravery and self reliance at starting a new school in a different country, but was appalled by how her family had rejected her. Her loneliness was heart-breaking. Although her knowledge and personality are well above the average of her age, she is still only a 12 year old. Her sisters have always been quite cruel to her, but she really loves her father, even though he is a very withdrawn person, a note from him would have gone a long way
