2024 reread via full cast audiobook. This audiobook claims to be unabridged but as it is a dramatization, it wasn't the full book. Still quite enjoyable though.

I really am enjoying these Maigret stories. This one starts with a shooting of a man who has had too much to drink, and on leaving the café where he has been drinking, decides to smoke a cigar. To remove himself from the blowing wind he steps inside the front of an empty building. Here, he is shot and thought to have been murdered. One of the better books in Georges Simenon's Inspector Maigret series. A shooting and attempted poisoning of four friends living in a rural, seaside village draw the national media and have the town living in fear. The mayor wants someone arrested - anyone - and Maigret obliges him. But not by arresting the person everyone is blaming.
