Brilliantly read as ever by Gareth Armstrong, this book focuses on the supposed murder of a man in an out of the way hotel room, that he used to frequent several times a year. Upon investigation it transpires he always checked in under the same name but not his real one. He appears never to have worked just relaxed around the town and local countryside.

The best Maigret thus far, albeit only the third (depending on which list one follows). Also the summer weather made a difference from all that rain Inspector Maigret had to brave in the first two cases. And some humour (view spoiler) . Intriguing case, in which Maigret shows that he is thorough, looks everywhere, including the other way.

I have become quite a fan of Simenon's writing style. It is brisk with no extras yet portrays a wonderful sense of place (here the summer heat pervades all Maigret's actions and everywhere he goes). Maigret himself is a dogged, no-nonsense investigator, determined to uncover the truth. He does not depend on flashes of brilliant intuition.
