Lunchtime Audiobook Listen May 2022
And so having more time now that most of the house renovation has been finished we are spending more time listening to books at lunchtime. And this is the latest .
And I have to say it has been really enjoyable. I think my wife is becoming a bit of a Maigret fan or is it the reading of Gareth Armstrong ?
Anyway this story IS brilliantly read by Gareth Armstrong. The wrong person could ruin these stories, but he makes them even better.

While I am not sure that I liked Coward's translation, I don't have anything to compare it to (other than memories of other, older translations of different Maigret books). I did like the canal setting, which provided a new environment to both Maigret & me. A quick and enjoyable read. ...more

The Carter of La Providence (also known as The Crime at Lock 14 and Le Charretier de la Providence) by Georges Simenon is the second book in the Inspector Maigret series. It was first published in Belgium in 1931 (yes, that old).
The environment of the story is unique. The incidents in this story all happen amidst rivers and lakes, with the traffic of boats coming through locks. It is interesting to note that when this book was written, horses were used to move the big boats through the canals. ...more

This would seem to be the second in the Maigret series, but there is some doubt about the position. In the first book, he is described as a "rock of a man", so I had some difficulty imagining him zooming about on a bicycle, however he does do that in this book. He does indeed cover forty miles in one day riding one. I liked the setting, being an insight into the life on a canal in the early 1930's, with the barges still being pulled along by horses on the towpath. Although motorised boats were a

I am leaning m0re towards 3.5 stars. My second Maigret books and still "acculturating" to Simenon's style. Both here (the title being a dead giveaway) and in Pietr the Latvian, we know who the guilty person is, so not really classic who-dunnits. Different, but I am definitely going to read more of Maigret's adventures
