This book centers on a young man, Meriet, who wants to join the monks at Shrewsbury, and wants to take his vows as soon as possible. He is eager to learn, and fit in with the monk's routine, however after seeing an accident happen to one of young boys, he begins to have nightmares. These nightmares upset all of the monks as he calls out in his sleep. This upsets the Abbott, as he feels that Meriet is too troubled to dedicate himself to God. Merier, a young 19 year old boy, has come to the monestary as a novice. He is quiet and very anxious to be ordained as a priest. He is very obediant and hard working but at night he screams in his sleep and the other novices say he is possessed by a devil. Brother Cadfael tries to help him but when an emissary of the king is found murdered and it is discovered that Merier was with him on the day he died, it looks as if he will be hanged.
