This seventh book in the series starts very dramatically when a young man suddenly enters the abbey, claiming sanctuary. He has been hurt and followed by a crowd who are convinced he has committed robbery and murder. The abbey allow him to have his 40 days grace and agree that they will hand him over to the law at the end of that time. Another pleasant visit with Cadfael, his friends, his abbey and the 12th century. There is a very dramatic and atmospheric opening as the young juggler seeks sanctuary during a midnight service.
