I’ve read this series several times over the years, always amused and entertained by the crime-solving Egyptologists. For me, it was always about the fierce and feisty, no-nonsense Victorian lady, Amelia Peabody Emerson, and her brilliant, handsome, but irascible husband; they are extremely devoted, yet strike sparks off each other constantly! That’s where much of the humor comes from - I wouldn’t want to live with them, perhaps, but they’re never dull.

It's clear to me that how well you like this book hinges on one thing - do you think Ramses is amusing or annoying? The first time I read this I hated him and thus disliked the book a lot. Part of the problem was that I worried that I'd be stuck with him chattering away like this for many more books, too. I now know that he soon outgrows this stage and doesn't blight all the future books, so I can put up with him here. It's a little like having a baby with colic. Everyone suffers for a while but

Well written froth. The crime ain't the thing: Amelia and her tool-belt, baby-genius Ramses, and the Emerson's propensity for bellowing and sentimental weeping over baby-genius Ramses, are. The crime plot is almost totally unsupported [by any kind of CLUE] and the denouement would be a surprise to any reader interested in it in the first place.

Gah, why did I wait so long to get into the Amelia Peadbody books? Serious failure, but look at me make up for it now.
