Lily Green is working at the Milford Village Library, slightly bemoaning the fact that all her adventures come within the pages of a book, when she sees an advert for a Murder Mystery Weekend at Fig Tree Hall. She decides to go, along with an assorted mix of other guests; Constable Peter Beresford, Frank and Diane Pargitter, plus the glamorous Cecelia Morris, who is staying at a local hotel. The weekend is being run by the self-styled Major and Lady Manners-Gore, who used to be actors. However, ...more

I found this a disappointing read overall, despite all its 5-star Goodreads ratings. It has a classic Golden Age setting, a murder mystery weekend at a stately home, but didn't live up to my expectations.

The characters are all 2-dimensional, the writing style is often clunky, and the author keeps unnecessarily repeating that one character, Diane, is overweight and wears too much make-up. I also feel the plot doesn't really make sense and leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

I had to give up after a couple of chapters. This self-published, unedited book is very difficult to read because of the frequent grammatical errors and typos that pulled me out of the story. She never speaks or acts without superfluous details, as in this sample from a page I opene ...more

This is a 2 and a half star book for me really. Although sort of liked it, I found it highly implausible in a lot of places. The characters were fine, although there was a lot of overstatement of the seize of one particular woman. I really do not see people putting up with the situation they found themselves in at any time this may have been set, especially as they had paid for it.

I might have given this two stars, but there are too many glowing reviews already. The plot is implausible, characters one-dimensional, descriptions repetitive, dialog stilted and ending unsurprising.

I did like the setting of the manor house with its secrets. And it is an easy read.
